CrimsonEMS is Harvard’s student-run collegiate emergency medical service. Founded in 2012 by Melanie Green and a group of students led by Elliot Stein ’13, Elise Molnar ’13, and Emily Breslow ’13, we have since experienced rapid growth, and now boast around 100 members each year. What started as a cohort of dedicated students who had received EMS certification elsewhere is now a full-fledged organization that trains around 20 new EMTs each year. In 2014, we began a partnership with Professional Ambulance & Oxygen Service, Inc. (Pro EMS), which currently teaches our EMT course and offers many professional development opportunities for our students, such as the ability to participate in ambulance ride-alongs.
Today, a major focus of CrimsonEMS is community outreach and education. We began offering CPR classes to members of the Harvard community in spring 2015. Three years later, the National Collegiate Emergency Medical Services Foundation (NCEMSF) designated Harvard University a HEARTSafe campus in recognition for our efforts to train more than five percent of the student body in hands-only CPR and AED use.
In 2018, we became involved with Stop The Bleed, a nationwide campaign to train bystanders in life-saving hemorrhage control. In spring 2019, we received a $10,000 grant from the University to deploy bleeding control kits across campus. We launched a House Representative program in fall 2019 to bring bleeding control instruction to each of the College’s twelve Houses, and in the first two months of the spring 2020 semester alone trained over 200 students. We look forward to expanding our outreach to include staff and students in Harvard’s graduate schools.
Later, we began outreach to local youth with our Youth Education Task Force (YETF). This program provided workshops to 9 area public schools and launched a Wintersession program that brought both our EMTs and CrimsonEMS-trained Harvard students to local high schools, where they trained 120 students in CPR, bleeding control, and emergency preparedness. CrimsonEMS members presented on Stop The Bleed and YETF at the 2020 NCEMSF conference, where we were also recognized for our campus-wide promotion of Collegiate EMS Week.
In 2023, we expanded the Development Branch to encompass more community outreach efforts, with roles dedicated to CPR education, Stop the Bleed awareness, and general first aid advocacy and training. As an organization, we believe that our knowledge as first responders can make a difference when further spread into our homes and communities, and will continue pushing for a better future in medicine and healthcare for all.
